THE TRIGGER — ONE LOOK
The instant you rip the rebound, snap your eyes deep: a teammate ahead of the field with open sideline in front of him. That's the kick-ahead lane — the ball flies faster than anyone runs.
YOUR JOB, BY WHERE YOU'RE STANDING
Rebounder
Rip it, turn, and throw ahead to the streaker before your first dribble — lead him toward the rim.
The kick-ahead outruns the entire retreating defense at once. Every dribble you take instead lets two more defenders get under the ball.
Wing
Sprint the sideline with a hand up and take the ball on the move — run to the catch, not to a spot.
Your speed is the whole advantage. Catching at full stride ahead of the field is a layup, or drawn help and an easy drop-off.
Trailer
Don't chase the ball up the sideline — trail into the slot behind the arc.
The kick-ahead either scores or sucks the whole defense to the rim. Trailing behind the play makes you the easy pitch-back three when it collapses.
THE NEXT BEAT
Every defender is sprinting to the paint with his back to the sideline. The lane stays open only while they're running blind — two dribbles of hesitation and the window seals into a normal half-court possession.
