The Long Closeout

A defender sprinting at you from far away is momentum you can use — one dribble past his lead foot beats his whole recovery.

THE TRIGGER — ONE LOOK

The catch with a defender still closing from distance — arms up, weight forward, feet chopping to slow down. The sprint is the tell.

YOUR JOB, BY WHERE YOU'RE STANDING

Catcher

Attack the lead foot with one hard dribble the instant you catch — don't let him land and get set.

A sprinting defender can't stop and slide at the same time. His lead foot tells you which side is dead; one dribble past it and his momentum takes him out of the play.

Adjacent man

Drift along the arc behind the drive — stay in the driver's line of sight for the pitch-back.

When the drive collapses the defense, the easiest pass is backward to where the driver can already see. Standing still puts a recovering defender between you and the ball.

Screener

Roll down the open lane to the rim while every defender's eyes are on the drive.

The drive drags the paint's attention with it. A big rolling opposite the ball arrives at the rim unmarked — the drop-off or the offensive board is waiting there.

THE NEXT BEAT

His momentum carries him past the arc, and the defense is suddenly rotating behind a live drive: the next helper steps up, and the pitch-back and the rim roll open one beat later.
