Move When the Ball Moves Downhill
When your teammate drives, your job is not to watch — it's to make your defender pay for helping. If your defender sinks toward the drive, slide along the perimeter to where the driver can see you, and be ready to shoot. If your defender stays glued to you, the driver has a clear lane, so keep your defender busy and away from the play. The rule: drift away from the drive, not toward it. Crowding the driver brings your defender into their path. Space is the best help you can give.
READ THIS
Watch your own defender's feet as your teammate drives — the moment they turn or slide toward the ball, the help has committed.
DO THIS
Drift along the arc into the driver's line of sight, hands ready, and let the kick-out arrive into your shot — never cut toward the drive.
COACHING LINEAGE
Steve Kerr
Off-ball movement wins: cut, relocate, space. The defense can only watch one thing.
Gregg Popovich
Ball movement is a weapon — the extra pass is always right. Good shot to great shot, every possession.
IN THE SITUATION ROTATION
In 2v2, your partner beats their man baseline on the left side. Your defender turns their head and slides toward the drive to help. You are standing on the left wing, one pass away.
