LESSON 4 OF 14

LEVEL 4Offenseall

Winning Without Touching the Ball

YOU4X112X5
FIG. 44OFF-BALL MISMATCHALL FORMATS
You can punish a bad matchup without ever holding the ball. If a smaller player is guarding you, walk them down to the block and hold your position — now your teammates know where the easy pass lives, and the defense has to send help before anything even happens. If a slower player is guarding you, keep moving: run them through screens and cuts until they're a step behind. A mismatch you maintain quietly for ten seconds bends the whole defense, because they have to solve you before they can guard anyone else.

READ THIS

Identify your mismatch the moment a switch or cross-match puts a smaller or slower defender on you, even when the ball is on the far side.

DO THIS

Seal a small deep on the block and re-seal with each reversal; run a slow defender off screens at full speed until the defense pays someone to help.

COACHING LINEAGE

Phil Jackson

The triangle decision framework applies to any offense — proper spacing turns every defensive choice into a wrong answer.

Steve Kerr

Off-ball movement wins: cut, relocate, space. The defense can only watch one thing.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

A switch leaves your big teammate sealing a much smaller defender at the right block. You have the ball up top, and you can feel your own defender cheating down, ready to dig the moment you throw the entry pass.
