Your Eyes Move Defenders

Good help defenders don't watch the ball — they watch your eyes, and they slide toward whatever you stare at. Once you know that, your eyes become a tool. On a drive, look at the teammate you don't intend to throw to. Stare at the roller and the low defender sinks toward them, opening the corner. Glance at the corner and the lane to the roller reopens. The pass goes where you weren't looking. It feels strange at first, so practice it on warmup drives until it's natural.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You turn the corner on a pick-and-roll with your roller diving and a shooter in the weak corner. The low help defender is good: they sit perfectly between roller and corner, reading your eyes, refusing to commit to either assignment.

Your drive down the right side pulls in two defenders, and out of the corner of your eye you see the far corner defender take two full steps into the paint to tag. Your shooter stands alone in the far left corner.
