The Dead Dribble

The dribble is dead and the defender climbs into the handler's jersey — the ball has to move to a cut, now.

THE TRIGGER — ONE LOOK

The swarm is the tell: the handler tucks the ball, and his defender jumps from an arm's length to chest-to-chest. Dead dribble means every passing lane is about to shrink.

YOUR JOB, BY WHERE YOU'RE STANDING

Picked-up handler

Pivot away from the pressure, keep the ball high and strong, and hit the first teammate flashing to you.

The worst outcomes — tie-up, steal, five-second call — all come from freezing. A strong pivot buys the half-second the cut needs to arrive.

Nearest teammate

Cut to the ball the moment the dribble dies — meet the pass, don't wait for it.

Standing still lets your defender deny the lane. Coming to the ball shortens the pass and puts your body between him and it.

Far man

Fill behind the play toward the top — become the safety valve the offense resets through.

When the nearest man cuts to the ball, someone has to be behind it. Your fill gives the escape pass an exit and restarts the possession.

THE NEXT BEAT

The on-ball defender mirrors the ball while every nearby defender stretches into deny. Each second the ball stays stuck, the tie-up and the five-second count get closer — the first cut to the ball beats all of it.
