Keep the Dribble Alive

1X12TRAP ZONE
FIG. 02LIVE DRIBBLE VS DEADALL FORMATS
While your dribble is alive, you have three options: shoot, pass, or drive. The moment you pick the ball up, you lose the drive, and the defense knows it. Watch what happens when a player kills their dribble — the defender jumps right up into their chest, because there is nothing left to fear. Never pick up your dribble without knowing what comes next. A live dribble keeps the defender honest and keeps every door open. A dead one invites pressure.

READ THIS

Watch the defender's posture the instant a ball-handler picks up the dribble — they climb into the offensive player's space immediately.

DO THIS

Keep your dribble until you've chosen a shot or seen a pass. If pressure comes, retreat-dribble to space instead of picking it up.

COACHING LINEAGE

Larry Brown

Play the right way: fundamental execution over flash, every possession.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You are at the top of the key with your dribble still alive, and your defender crowds up into your body. Your first pass is denied and the pressure makes you want to pick the ball up and look around.
