Transition 2-on-1

Two of you, one of him, a full head of steam — the lone defender can only be right about one thing.

FIG. 082-ON-1 BREAKALL FORMATS

THE TRIGGER — ONE LOOK

Count while you push: one defender backpedaling between you and the rim, nobody else back. A 2-on-1 is a decision you force, not a race you win.

YOUR JOB, BY WHERE YOU'RE STANDING

Ballhandler

Push at the defender's chest down the middle and make him choose — finish if he sits, drop it off if he jumps.

Attacking the middle keeps both options alive to either side. Drift wide and he guards you both with one slide.

Runner

Sprint the wide lane and stay wide — level with the ball, running all the way to the rim.

Wide is what makes the defender's choice impossible: guard the ball and the drop-off is a layup behind him. Cut in early and one man guards you both.

THE NEXT BEAT

The lone defender fakes at the ball and drops toward the runner — his whole plan is stalling until help arrives. Attack the middle and make him commit for real; whichever man he picks, the other one scores.
