COURT 201

LESSON 1 OF 9

LEVEL 2Small Sided1v1

Space Is the First Move

YOU1X1CREATEDSPACE
FIG. 08CREATING SPACE1V1
In one-on-one, the defender's whole job is to stay attached to you. Your whole job is to make them let go. Space comes from sudden changes — a jab step that makes them hop back, a hard dribble at their body that makes them retreat, a step-back that separates after they've committed forward. You don't need to be faster than your defender. You need to make them move first, in the wrong direction, and then take the space they just gave up. Every move is really a space-making move.

READ THIS

Watch the defender's cushion — the gap between you — and notice when your hard dribble at their body makes their weight jump backward.

DO THIS

Drive hard at their chest, and when their hips retreat, snap into your step-back and rise before their recovery step lands.

COACHING LINEAGE

Larry Brown

Play the right way: fundamental execution over flash, every possession.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You are playing one-on-one against a strong, physical defender who stays glued to your jersey. Every time you try to rise into a shot they are in your chest, and simple jabs are not moving them.
