No Help Is Coming

FIG. 01DEFENDING WITHOUT HELP1V1
In one-on-one there is no help defender, no rotation, and no one to bail you out. That changes how you guard. Your only job is to never get beaten cleanly — a contested shot is a win, a blow-by is a disaster. Figure out early what your opponent wants. If they are quicker than you, back off a step and make them shoot. If they love the jumper, crowd them and make them drive the long way. Take away their favorite thing and live with the rest.

READ THIS

Notice within the first two possessions which weapon hurts you — the blow-by past your pressure or the jumper over your cushion.

DO THIS

Set your gap to take that weapon away: a full step off the driver, chest-up on the shooter — and shade their strong hand either way.

COACHING LINEAGE

Tom Thibodeau

Help defense positioning: one pass away, always. Be early, not late.

Larry Brown

Play the right way: fundamental execution over flash, every possession.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You are guarding someone noticeably quicker than you in a one-on-one game. Twice already they have blown past you off the first dribble while you were crowding them at the arc.

Appears as a Situation of the Day · 1v1

You are defending a right-handed scorer in one-on-one who has beaten you twice going to their right hand. They are quick, and playing them straight up has not worked. They check the ball and size you up again.
