Change Speeds, Change the Game

YOU1X1SLOWBURST
FIG. 11PACE MANIPULATION1V1
Playing fast all the time is the same as playing slow all the time: the defender can set their rhythm to yours. What breaks a defender is change. Move slow enough that they relax, then explode. Attack hard enough that they backpedal, then stop short. The gap between your speeds is your real quickness — a player with an average first step but a great slow gear beats sprinters every day. If everything you do happens at one speed, you're easy to guard no matter how fast that speed is.

READ THIS

Watch the defender's stance during your slow gear — straightening knees, dropping hands, or slides synced to your rhythm.

DO THIS

Lull them at walking pace, and the moment their stance relaxes, explode past in one burst — then vary the pattern so it never repeats.

COACHING LINEAGE

Phil Jackson

The triangle decision framework applies to any offense — proper spacing turns every defensive choice into a wrong answer.

Doc Rivers

The mental game is real: confidence is a tactical weapon. Hesitation is the most common turnover.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You have been attacking at full speed every possession of this one-on-one game, and your defender has timed you up. They are beating you to your spots because they know exactly how fast you are coming.
