YOU1X1OPEN LANE
FIG. 02PUNISHING THE REACH1V1
Defenders who swipe at the ball are giving you something. Every reach shifts their weight forward and sideways — the moment a hand lunges for your dribble and misses, the defender is leaning where the hand went and their feet cannot push off. That is your green light. Don't yank the ball away and reset; that wastes the gift. Go immediately, past the shoulder they reached with. In one-on-one, a reaching defender is a beaten defender. You just have to be ready before the reach happens.

READ THIS

Watch for the swipe pattern — a defender who reaches right after your crossover, weight tipping past their toes when they miss.

DO THIS

Bait one more reach, then drive tight past the reaching shoulder the instant their weight commits — straight line, no reset.

COACHING LINEAGE

Larry Brown

Play the right way: fundamental execution over flash, every possession.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You are playing one-on-one at the park and your defender keeps swiping at your dribble. This time they lunge in for a steal, miss the ball, and their whole body tilts forward off balance.

Appears as a Situation of the Day · 1v1

You have been attacking at full speed every possession of this one-on-one game, and your defender has timed you up. They are beating you to your spots because they know exactly how fast you are coming.
