Fill What the Cut Empties

FIG. 06FLOOR BALANCE 4V44V4
In 4v4 every spot matters, because there is one fewer teammate to cover the floor. When a teammate cuts through and doesn't get the ball, their spot — usually a corner — is now empty, and the ball-handler has just lost a kick-out option. Somebody has to fill it, and the somebody is usually you, the next player over. Sprint to the vacated spot as the cut clears. This keeps the floor balanced, keeps your defender busy, and keeps every drive supported by a safety valve.

READ THIS

A teammate cuts through without receiving the ball, and the strong-side corner goes empty behind them.

DO THIS

Sprint to fill the vacated corner as the cutter clears, and let the players behind you rotate one spot to rebalance the floor.

COACHING LINEAGE

Brad Stevens

Analytical precision: the right shot in the right spot beats a contested hero shot every time.

Steve Kerr

Off-ball movement wins: cut, relocate, space. The defense can only watch one thing.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

In your 4v4 game, the teammate in the right corner cuts through to the rim and does not get the ball. Now the corner near your ball handler is empty, and you are standing at the top watching the play.

Appears as a Situation of the Day · 4v4

You are sprinting the right lane on a 4v4 break, but the defense has two players back and your ball handler is slowing to a probe. The easy layup is gone, and you have to decide where your sprint should end.
