Autopilot and the Radio

12345PASS, CUT, FILL — FOREVER
FIG. 122FREELANCE VS SETSALL FORMATS
When you don't call a play in 2K, your teammates don't just stand there — they run something called a freelance. A freelance is a motion offense: a small set of standing rules that never stop running. Pass the ball, then cut to the basket. See an empty spot a teammate just left? Fill it. Shooter stuck in the corner? Go screen for them. There's no beginning and no end — just principles looping until a shot appears. A called play is the opposite: a scripted sequence with a start, a finish, and one specific shot in mind. Real teams live in exactly this balance. Most NBA possessions are flow — motion principles, not scripts — and coaches save actual play calls for moments that matter: after a timeout, late in a close game, or when they want a certain player attacking a certain defender. So the choice you make every 2K possession — let the freelance cook, or pull up the play menu — is the same choice a real point guard makes crossing half court. Autopilot flies most of the trip. You grab the radio when you need something specific.

READ THIS

Watch when real teams call plays — dead balls, late clock, must-score moments — and notice they just flow the rest of the time.

DO THIS

Play one full 2K game calling nothing but freelance, then one calling a set every trip — feel where each breaks down and where each shines.

COACHING LINEAGE

Phil Jackson

The triangle decision framework applies to any offense — proper spacing turns every defensive choice into a wrong answer.

Steve Kerr

Off-ball movement wins: cut, relocate, space. The defense can only watch one thing.
