Stopping the Avalanche

FIG. 40MOMENTUM MANAGEMENTALL FORMATS
Basketball runs in waves. The other team hits three shots in a row, the crowd gets loud, your teammates' shoulders drop — and suddenly a two-point game is a twelve-point game. Momentum is real, and managing it is a skill. When the wave is against you, slow everything down: take care of the ball, work for a great shot instead of a quick one, and get one solid stop. One good possession on each end breaks the spell. When the wave is yours, do the opposite — push the pace and keep the pressure on before they can regroup.

READ THIS

Notice the run forming — consecutive scores, rising opponent energy, your teammates rushing — and identify what specific mistake is feeding it.

DO THIS

Slow the next possession deliberately: paint touch, great shot, no turnover — then lock the coverage that's been leaking on the other end.

COACHING LINEAGE

Doc Rivers

The mental game is real: confidence is a tactical weapon. Hesitation is the most common turnover.

Phil Jackson

The triangle decision framework applies to any offense — proper spacing turns every defensive choice into a wrong answer.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

The other team has scored on three straight possessions, an 8-0 run, and their whole squad is talking and flying around. You bring the ball up and can feel your teammates pressing, ready to jack the first shot they see.
