Hold the Corner

FIG. 59CORNER SPACING5V5
The corner looks like the least important spot on the floor — far from the ball, quiet, easy to wander away from. It's the opposite. A player standing in the corner pins a defender to the worst help position on the court: too far to stop drives, unable to leave without giving up the shortest three-pointer in the game. When you're the corner man, your discipline is the play: stay wide, stay ready, and resist the urge to creep toward the action. Drifting up the wing 'to get involved' drags your defender into the driving lane and wrecks the spacing for everyone.

READ THIS

Watch your defender's head and feet from the corner — full ball-watching opens the backdoor; a committed low-man rotation opens your shot or the dunker drift.

DO THIS

Hold the corner wide and shot-ready, drift baseline to the dunker spot only when the drive commits your defender, and cut backdoor only off a full head turn.

COACHING LINEAGE

Steve Kerr

Off-ball movement wins: cut, relocate, space. The defense can only watch one thing.

Gregg Popovich

Ball movement is a weapon — the extra pass is always right. Good shot to great shot, every possession.
