Make the Hot Hand Catch Cold

FIG. 10GUARDING THE HOT HANDALL FORMATS
When an opponent has made three or four in a row, the worst plan is to keep defending them the same way and hope. Hot shooters live on rhythm: same spots, clean catches, comfortable dribbles. Your job is to remove the rhythm. Deny the easy catch, meet them a step earlier than you did last trip, and chase them off their favorite spot so their next shot is a new shot. Make them drive into your help instead. They may still score — but make every point cost them something different.

READ THIS

The scorer keeps returning to the same spot on the floor where their last makes came from, hunting the same rhythm catch.

DO THIS

Deny the catch at that spot, meet them earlier than last trip, and change the coverage they see — no repeated shots, no rhythm.

COACHING LINEAGE

Chuck Daly

Physical defensive positioning: make the offense feel every possession.

Tom Thibodeau

Help defense positioning: one pass away, always. Be early, not late.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

You are guarding a player who has hit three pull-up jumpers tonight. A ball screen arrives at your right shoulder, and your teammate is in coverage behind it. You have half a second to choose your path.

Appears as a Situation of the Day · all

You are guarding an elite movement shooter who has torched your team off pindown screens all night. Another pindown is being set below them, and you can see the whole route they want to run before the ball swings their way.
