The Baseline Drive Rotation
The ball beat somebody baseline — now three defenders trade jobs in two seconds, or it's a layup or an open three.
THE TRIGGER — ONE LOOK
An offensive shirt below the on-ball defender along the baseline. The drive is past him — from that instant, 'stay with your man' is over.
YOUR JOB, BY WHERE YOU'RE STANDING
Low man
Leave your man and sprint across the paint — meet the drive at the block and wall up, no reaching.
You are the only rim protection left, and a beat late is a layup. Your abandoned big is the next defender's problem — that trust is what makes the rotation work.
Weakside wing defender
Drop down and take the big the low man just abandoned — the X-out is yours the instant he leaves.
The drop-off pass to the dunker spot is the drive's easiest outcome. If nobody inherits that big, stopping the ball just moved the layup one pass away.
Beaten man
Don't chase the ball you already lost — peel off and sprint to the open shooter the rotation left behind.
Two defenders on the ball fixes nothing. Your teammates covered your man; the open man is now yours, and the kick-out is the pass the offense wants most.
THE NEXT BEAT
The drive pulls the low man, the low man's abandoned big becomes the drop-off threat, and the kick-out to the open shooter follows — the scramble hits every weakside defender in order, one beat apart.
