One Pass Away vs Two (Help Line)

Off the ball, your distance from your man is set in passes, not feet: deny at one pass away, sink to the midline at two.

THE TRIGGER — ONE LOOK

Count the passes from the ball to your man. That one number picks your spot on the floor before the offense does anything.

YOUR JOB, BY WHERE YOU'RE STANDING

On-ball defender

Pressure the ball with your feet, not your hands — take away the middle and the easy pass.

Everything behind you is built on the ball seeing pressure. A comfortable ballhandler picks the help apart; a hurried one throws the pass your teammates are sitting on.

One pass away

Deny up the line — an arm's length off your man, hand in the passing lane, head on a swivel.

One pass away, your job is the catch itself: make the easy swing hard. Sag here and the offense moves the ball freely; overplay blind and the backdoor beats you.

Two passes away

Sink to the midline — one foot near the lane, seeing your man and the ball in the same look.

Two passes away, you are the help: the driving lane is yours to plug. The skip to your man takes the ball a full flight-time to arrive — that's your recovery window.

THE NEXT BEAT

The offense swings the ball specifically to change your number — every pass flips deniers into helpers and helpers into deniers, and the defense that re-sorts fastest gives up nothing.
