GREGG POPOVICH'S SYSTEM

Motion Weak

The extra pass as a weapon — drive to bend the defense, then punish the recovery with the pass you didn't have to make.

When a great shot is available, take it. When a great pass is available, make it. The ball has energy — keep it moving.

Pop's Spurs beat more athletic teams for twenty years by refusing to finish possessions early. The drive isn't the shot — it's the crowbar. Every drive bends the defense out of shape, and every rotation the defense makes leaves someone a beat late somewhere else. The empty-corner drive removes the help before it exists. Two defenders in the paint means someone on the perimeter is open by arithmetic. An overloaded side sets up the one skip pass that flips the whole floor. Good shot to great shot, every possession — the ball has energy; keep it moving.

  • Ball movement is a weapon — the extra pass is always right. Good shot to great shot, every possession.
  • Read tendencies before they happen. Defense is anticipation, not reaction.
  • Spacing is the foundation of all offense. Without it, nothing else works.
  • Pound the rock: improvement is invisible until the stone splits. Keep hitting.

RUN IT AT THE PARK

One sentence changes your pickup team: drive to pass, not to score. Attack the empty-corner side, and when the help comes — it always comes — hit the man the help left. If you're off the ball, your job is to be where the driver's eyes land: drift to the corner, lift to the wing, fill the spot a cutter vacated. The team that makes the second pass after the drive gets layups all day against defenses that can only chase the first one.

HOW TO BEAT IT

No middle, no paint. Shade every drive to the sideline and keep it out of the lane, because the kickout game starts with penetration — no bend, no windows. Close out short with high hands: take away the pass-on-the-catch and make the shooter put it on the floor instead. And don't ball-watch on the weak side; the skip pass only kills teams whose weakside defenders forgot their man exists.
