LESSON 2 OF 10

LEVEL 2Team5v5

Five Players, Three Rules

1235X1
FIG. 30MOTION RULES5V5
Motion offense has no script — just rules everyone follows. Rule one: when you pass, don't stand still. Cut to the basket or go screen for a teammate. Rule two: keep spacing — if a teammate cuts through, fill the spot they left. Rule three: the ball never sticks — catch, look, and make a decision within a couple of seconds. Follow those rules and the offense generates open shots by itself, because five moving players are impossible to guard with five reacting defenders. Stand and watch, and it all dies.

READ THIS

After you pass, read your defender — eyes turned to follow the ball or body jumping toward the pass means the back cut is there; a sagging defender says go screen.

DO THIS

Pass and immediately cut or screen away, fill the nearest vacated spot when a teammate cuts, and make your decision within half a second of every catch.

COACHING LINEAGE

Gregg Popovich

Ball movement is a weapon — the extra pass is always right. Good shot to great shot, every possession.

Steve Kerr

Off-ball movement wins: cut, relocate, space. The defense can only watch one thing.

IN THE SITUATION ROTATION

Your team runs motion offense with a simple rule set: pass, then move with purpose. You swing the ball from the top to the right wing and catch yourself starting to stand and watch what happens next.
